I worked with Bay Area musician and arranger Rolf Johnson to create this exciting version of a classic Cole Porter masterpiece. I felt that the lyrics - set in our time - reflect our deep human need for connection to something we can believe in- Love! - when the rest of the world looks so hopeless. What I created for Rolf to work with: a contemporary quasi-hiphop-latin groove to move this piece into our time; some extensions of the chordal harmonies to make it even more lush; a few syncopated rhythmic riffs I liked for the verses; longer spans of the bridge phrases to embrace the intrigue and power of the words expressing the physical connection with someone you love; and his freedom to write a crazy soli section for the horn sections and me to play with.
