I am thrilled to be cast in a leading role in a relatively new play, "NATION OF TWO", the second of a trilogy of plays called "The War Cycle", collaboratively written by Tom Burmester and the Los Angeles Theatre Ensemble, @2009.
Nation of Two, inspired by true accounts of the families of soldiers fallen in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, is a domestic drama that studies the grieving processes of families that lose relatives in war. It follows the lives of the Harper family as they prepare to scatter the ashes of 24-year-old Lt. Michael Harper on the anniversary of his combat-related death in the Iraq War. A surprise visit from a soldier who served with Michael at the time of his death ignites a powder keg of emotion and throws the family into crisis as they strive to preserve their memories of Michael while learning to let go. I will be playing the role of Lilith, Micheal's mother, under the awesome direction of Chase McKenna at Bruka Theater, running 4 weeks - March 16 through April 7.
Directed by Chase McKenna, the cast is:
Chase McKenna – Sophia Harper
Jessey Richards – Ariel Harper
Cami Thompson – Lilith Harper
Jon Lutz – Sam Harper
Ender Riddle – Dina Harper
Greg Klino – Sgt. Hal Taylor
Brantly C Compton – Raphael
Brian Ault – Capt. Webber
Noel Tsuchiya – Lt. Stevens
Vincent Rodriguez – Lt. Butler

LAST WEEKEND - 3 MORE SHOWS! FEBRUARY 15, 16, 17
Reno, NV. James Goldman’s The Lion in Winter continues the 25th anniversary season at Brüka Theatre on January 26th, 2018. A game of thrones for the stage: with sibling rivalry, adultery, and dungeons The Lion in Winter is comedic in tone and dramatic in action. For the 3rd year in a row, I am the vocal director for the (18th) annual production of "SIAMSA - A Celtic Christmas Show", produced and directed by Amanda Coulson and the Reno Irish Dance Company. This is a very large and fully professional production with a cast of over 50 dancers, singers, musicians and special guests, and the wonderful Jesse Briggs in the lead role of “Holly”, a young orphaned woman who is looking for the true meaning of Christmas to share with her younger sister, who has never heard of the Celtic tradition of the “candle in the window.” In this beautifully staged and costumed 2-act (2-hour) production, Holly travels to many different Celtic villages, each with its own story and dance number or song. A young women choir sings carols and holiday songs in harmony, which I have arranged and directed.

OPENING NIGHT OF
"NEXT TO NORMAL"!
Runs July 7th thru 30th during Reno's Artown Festival
I am thrilled to be Music and Vocal Director for this outstanding Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical opera with an outstanding cast. Its story concerns a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effects that her illness and the attempts to alleviate it have on her family. The musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and the underbelly of suburban life.
CAST: Cori Lynne, Ryan Kelly, Thomas Thompson, Adam Semas, Natalie Gomez, Adam Walmsley
How does a family deal with mental illness and tragedy over 16 years? In this show, written by Tom Kitt (American Idiot, Everyday Rapture and If/Then) and Brian Yorkey (If/Then and The Last Ship), it is done humorously, cleverly, and very musically - and each of the 38 songs is taut with emotional reality and depth.
The musical opened on Broadway in April 2009. It was nominated for eleven 2009 Tony Awards and won three, Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley. It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming just the eighth musical in history to receive the honor. The previous musical to win the Pulitzer was Rent, in 1996, which was also directed by Michael Greif. In awarding the prize to Kitt and Yorkey, the Pulitzer Board called the show "a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals."
Learn more about the play here... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_to_Normal
Then come see us perform it!
Our production features a live 7-piece band, and runs for 14 shows from July 7th thru the 30th.
Be sure to book your seats early, as this Artown event will surely sell out.

After quite a long break from singing jazz, I will be doing a FREE jazz concert this Sunday, July 31st, from 6-8pm, at the Sands Casino's "Jazz by the Pool" series, presented by Reno's long-running jazz society, "For the Love of Jazz". (That was alot of Jazz!)
I first performed for FTLOJ @ 1979 I think? while in college at UNR, and several more times throughout the years, as I was developing my jazz chops, and being supported, coached, and inspired by the founders and members of that great group of jazzers.
I'm sorry to admit that I have not done a jazz concert around here (or anywhere!) in a few years! So I'm looking forward to a beautiful musical afternoon with my dear friends and comrades: Peter Supersano on piano, Joe McKenna on bass, and Te Kanawa Haereiti (Rufus!) on drums, and for a bunch of friends and jazz lovers sitting around the pool sipping cool drinks and actually LISTENING to the music!
Thank you, FTLOJ, for letting me play with you all again.

An Intimate Evening with Cami: "Passion - The Rhythm of Romance" -
7:00 and 9:30
713 So. Virginia St
Reno NV 89509
(775)322-3716 [map]
Price: $15/ $20 at door/ADULT
AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH CAMI THOMPSON:
"PASSION"
Adults only Concert
In the heart of Reno’s artistic Midtown District lies Good Luck Macbeth, an intimate black box theater known for producing innovative works, all-original pieces, and classic productions. Good Luck Macbeth taps into the beat and pulse of what is current and relevant to art and theatre. It is said that everyone has a story, and Good Luck Macbeth strives to feature tales that resonate with audiences of all backgrounds. It is their mission to make art and theatre more accessible to the Northern Nevada community, and enrich the culture and quality of our city.
In so doing, the directors of this unique thriving company have started asking local performance artists to present unique story-telling concerts and events in their delightful intimate theater, and I was called…
After a summer of performing in musical theater (“The Full Monty” at Brüka Theater during Artown, and “Cinderella” with Sierra School of the Performing Arts running Sept. 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 13) I feel the need to answer that call – to spread my jazz wings and stoke my soul fire - by presenting another one of my thematic concerts. In my constant search for the meaning of life, and my committed desire to spread the ideology of Love and Acceptance as a powerful way of living, this concert will be – as most of mine are – about Love, but this time it’s more about… Passion. Attraction. Desire. Heartache. Healing. And... I think this is gonna have to be for adults only…. 18 and over!
I invite you to come join us at Good Luck Macbeth Theater on Friday September 18th and explore together some musical expressions of my personal Passion journey - when Reason and Objectivity were rendered Passive to my more powerful passionate Emotions. Co-creating this musical story will be three of my wonderful musician friends: Peter Supersano on keys, Joe McKenna on bass, and Te Kanawa “Rufus” Haereiti on drums.
Drawing from words, music, and styles spanning the Great American Songbook of the 1930s and 40s, Jazz, Broadway, Pop, Rock, R&B, Soul, Blues, and my originals, I will be passionately singing about attraction, desire, romance, sex, betrayal, jealousy, heartache, forgiveness, longing, bad choices, second chances, healing… and Love.
What is Desire? Attraction? Lust? Is our libido just chemical, biological, hormonal, self-serving? Is passion psychological, sociological, habitual? And what about Jealousy? Obsession? Insecurity? How badly can fear affect Love? How does our Culture affect our sexual and emotional happiness?
Are there more resonant “conscious” reasons for attraction – like Karma, purpose, or destiny?
Can we create Love by choice?

The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits. This production features a live orchestra, a cast of over 50, and Yours Truly as the Fairy Godmother – “Impossible!... things are happening every day!”

CAMI & the COSMOPOLITANS Swing Band Concert -
6:00-8:00
28 Orinda Way
Orinda CA 94563
[map]
Price: FREE OUTDOOR CONCERT!
Exciting jazz vocalist Cami Thompson will be in concert with her 7-piece Bay Area-based Jazz & Swing band Cami and the Cosmopolitans at the Orinda Community Park on Tuesday, August 11th from 6:00 to 8:00PM.
This event is sponsored by the Orinda Rotary Club and is free to the public. A large grassy area in front of the bandstand is perfect for a family picnic or a romantic getaway with a bottle of wine and a blanket!
Cosmopolitan: def: The term cosmopolitan refers to an individual who retains cultural roots in his or her country of origin, yet has adopted a wide taste for other cultures, and so lives both a "local" and "global" life. The term is derived from Greek cosmos, the global, and polis, the old Greek city-states (the local). Cosmopolitan is also used as a synonym for “worldly” or “sophisticated”. A Cosmopolitan also refers to a sweet and sassy cocktail made with vodka, cranberry juice, and orange liquor, a favorite after-work libation of Cami’s!
With a deep understanding of the roots of jazz, a great love of the “Great American Songbook”, and a zest for innovative improvisation, Cami And The Cosmopolitans present a vast canvas of jazz styles, splashing the colors of bop, bebop, straight-ahead, modern jazz and the swingin’est of swing with brushstrokes of blues, gospel, Dixie, Rhythm & Blues and world music. Many of the songs are Cami’s own arrangements and originals, and others have come from the pen of many of the gifted musicians in her band, and others who have shared time with Cami on stages around the country.
Cami Thompson is a delightful experience for audiences of all tastes. With a wide reputation of wowing audiences with her powerfully passionate voice, her remarkable jazz skills, and her zany sense of humor, Cami is one of the great entertainers of our time. Combining elements from her background in jazz, pop, musical theater and classical music, she moves through whispering to belting out the songs of Gershwin, Cole Porter, Ellington, Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, Rogers & Hart & Hammerstein, and others with robust honesty and exciting vibrancy. Her style has been called “a delightful mix of Ella Fitzgerald and Bette Midler”, and she is often compared to Cleo Laine, Sarah Vaughan, Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole and Nancy Wilson. But Cami is truly an original, gathering loyal fans throughout her 40 professional years performing around the US, Europe and Asia -- in nightclubs, concerts, festivals and theaters -- with her unique charm and explosive talent. Cami currently has 6 recordings to her name, has guested on several, including Mike Vax’s big band, and has a new CD in development. Add amazing professional talented musicians to her show -- friends she has shared the stage, music and laughter with for years – and you can bet that Cami and the Cosmopolitans will fill your heart with joy! …. Come join the Cosmos!
The Rotary Club of Orinda, now in its 65th year, was established in 1949 with a commitment to service in their community and beyond, serving those less fortunate or in need of support.

Based on the cult-hit film of the same name, the Broadway hit “The Full Monty”, a 10-time Tony Award-nominee, is filled with honest affection, engaging songs and the most highly anticipated closing number of any show. The powerhouse team of Terrence McNally (RAGTIME) and David Yazbek (DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS) cook up an aggressive crowd pleaser that both entertains and grabs your heart.
I get the chance to reprise a role I played 3 years ago in San Francisco (with Ray Of Light Theatre) - Jeanette, the aging showbiz-savvy, wise-cracking piano player who helps the boys put on a "really big show"! Our cast of 20 is so wonderful, made up of some of the best local talent: John Frederick, Ryan Kelly, Jeffery Bentley, Braford Ka-ai'ai, Jeff Chamberlain, newcomer Eric Williams, Sophie Moeller, Amy Ginder, Cori Lynne, moi, Hannah Davis, Valerie Burnett, Kathy Welch, Bob Barsanti, Christopher Salas, Robert Grant, Brandon Trefethen, Christina Saunders, Sarah Riley. And the 9-piece band sounds great! We are getting it ready for you!!!

So why am I inviting you to this Saturday afternoon concert?? Well - the way I see it... the BEST thing we can do to guarantee an artful, connected, enlivened, involved community... is to support the YOUTH of our community in their endeavors, ESPECIALLY the arts.
The McQueen High School Orchestra has over 150 students performing in it!!! I'm very excited to hear them, and I'm honored to be asked to sing two songs with them, one solo and one duet with Ms. Tiffanie Story ("For Good" from the Broadway hit musical "Wicked".)
And by the way, the McQueen Choir program, under the direction of Maribeth Burt, also has over 150 singers participating.
That's over 300 students you WON'T see causing problems in our community - because they are too busy practicing and performing, and keeping up their required GPAs to be able to participate in the music programs! And more important - because they have sense of BELONGING to something that makes them feel important, makes them feel connected and needed, they don't feel the desire to destroy - they create!
SO PLEASE SUPPORT ARTS IN OUR SCHOOLS -- because it makes better people!
And McQueen is just one of our 14 - yep, 14 High Schools in Washoe Valley... What a difference the Arts can make all across our homeland!
And what better way to show our support and encouragement for our future friends, artists, neighbors, civic leaders, business people, and fellow citizens than to spend 90 minutes of a chilly Fall Saturday afternoon in a beautiful warm concert hall listening to wonderful orchestral music, and cheering on our young musicians? (Hey - Put yourself in their shoes, hoping for a full audience, load applause, and the chance to play for you!)
My Motto:
THE MORE INSTRUMENTS OF SELF-EXPRESSION AND CREATION WE PUT INTO OUR CHILDREN'S HANDS, THE LESS LIKELY THEY WILL PUT INSTRUMENTS OF DESTRUCTION IN THEM.

I have ben asked to sing a couple songs for a wonderful event tomorrow night at Grand Sierra Resort Ballroom - for the celebratory dinner for the creation of the new Challenger Learning Center just built at Sparks High. Guest speaker will be Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, first American woman to walk in space and now Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator. Tomorrow night will be the 30th anniversary of her spacewalk!

Went to the preview tonight - super cool place! Send them donations!!!

I am recording a track to sing along with to John Denver's "Flying For Me", an homage to the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. But I also want to sing that shows respect for the life and work of Kathryn Sullivan. I am re-writing the lyrics to "Let It Go", to honor her first walk in space, and everything she had to learn - and conquer - to do it.

Jessica Ann Faber sang before she spoke. She loved to entertain from the moment she could speak. Singing, acting, dancing and movies were her greatest passions. The performing arts helped her to develop and become the amazing person she was. Jessica dreamed of one day going to Hollywood. Tragically, Jessica never had a chance to fully fulfill her dreams. On December 29th, 2009, a wrong-way drunk driver ran head on into Jessica's car, bringing her life and dreams to a halt at the young age of 18.

Prescott, Arizona is located in Arizona's high country, just 90 miles north of Phoenix. Combining the dulcet and swingin' sounds of some of the nation's most outstanding jazz musicians with the moderate summer temperatures and towering shade trees of Prescott means 'cool' is a word you'll no doubt utter often during the Annual Prescott Jazz Summit... This jazz festival has strong ties to the music education community, and is also a Signature Event for the City of Prescott. We also perform jazz workshops which are attended by high school jazz bands from all over our state, and have donated funds to local high school music programs.

I am playing the part of Joanne in the cast of Stephen Sondheim's musical "Company" now playing at Reno's GLM (Good Luck Macbeth) Theater Company during Artown, Reno's famous month-long arts festival.
I LOVE the great songs in this show, and the message that no matter how hard and awkward and compromising love relationships can be, in the long run we need them - to grow, to learn, and to feel alive.
The part of Joanne was played by Elaine Stritch on Broadway, and recently by Patti Lupone in the revival - I think I've got some big shoes to fill! But I'm really looking forward to it! Our cast is wonderful! Reviews are great!
The original 1970 Hal Prince production was nominated for a record-setting
fourteen Tony Awards and won six.
CAST LIST:
Bobby ~ Chad Sweet
Joanne ~ Cami Thompson Larry ~ Scott House
Paul ~ Brad Fitch Amy ~ Alexa Bernal
Sarah ~ Amanda McHenry Harry ~ Ian Sorensen
Susan ~ Ana Golbov Peter ~ Adam Semas

"Painting the Clouds with Sunshine" -
thru April 20
215 Jackson Street
San Francisco CA USA (415) 255-8207 [map]
Price: $21 - $75
Book by Greg MacKellan & Mark D. Kaufmann * Directed by Mark D. Kaufmann
Music & Lyrics by Harold Arlen, Richard Whiting, Yip Harburg, Ralph Rainger, Johnny Mercer, Harry Warren, Cole Porter & Others
Runs April 2nd thru April 20th - 3 weeks!
I have a principal role with 42nd Street Moon's musical production "Painting the Clouds with Sunshine" -- a brand new, world premiere musical with some beloved songs from the 1930s! The Great Depression as viewed through the prism of the Talking Pictures Musicals that swept the clouds away in the darkest times.
The score will include songs from the 1930s movie musicals such as: Painting the Clouds With Sunshine, Good Morning Glory, I Wished On The Moon, Sing You Sinners, Marahuana, Jeepers Creepers, You Oughta Be in Pictures, and Dusty Shoes.
I play Willa, a widow who was a former Vaudevile performer, and now runs a diner on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles in 1935. My waitress and her friend want to be in the movies, my regulars are in newspaper and show business, and all our paths cross into a delightful story about hopes, dreams, romance, happiness, money, and what we do to have all that during the Great Depression (sort of like today, huh?) Two characters serve as our "movie star muses" as we see them on the screen - and off!
Book by Greg MacKellan & Mark D. Kaufmann
Music & Lyrics by Milton Ager, Remo Biondi, Joseph A Burke, Sam Coslow, B.G. DeSylva, Al Dubin, Dorothy Fields, Mack Gordon, Jay Gorney, Clifford Grey, Oscar Hammerstein II, E.Y. Harburg, Franke W. We contribute to its evolution and continuing vitality by presenting intimately produced performances of classic and rarely performed musical works. We are committed to preserving and presenting lesser-known, rarely-produced musical theatre works of the early to mid-20th century. We do so in part to ensure the survival of the origins of the American musical theatre as an art form. Sparks NV 89431
800-648-1177 [map]
Price: $35
The 50th anniversary of SHEEP DIP! -
~~~ the biggest little craziest community satire show in the world!
2 NIGHTS! January 17th and 18th at 8:00 at the famous Nugget Showroom!
WHAT IS SHEEP DIP???
The name Sheep Dip is drawn from Nevada's early heritage of sheep herding in the Sierra Nevada. Sheep Dip is a cleansing element in which sheep are literally dipped. Today we dip our newsmakers in the satirical vat of Sheep Dip to cleanse them of their past deeds...so that they may go right back and be foolish again!
Begun by members of the advertising agencies and media in Reno, this annual fundraiser show, dedicated to exposing the follies and foibles of the Truckee Meadows in an evening of skits, songs and dance, is performed by area locals (your neighbors) along with members of the media and even a few of our famous (and infamous) politicians. Together efforts go to raise funds that support charitable activities in the RENO/SPARKS and Greater Northern Nevada Area. Sheep Dip, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
My dad, Don "Snoshu" Thompson, was involved in Sheep Dip as a writer, performer, and director for over 30 years. I performed with him in the cast since I was about 12 years old for several years, and have come back now and then as a guest performer. This year I am a guest artist for the 50th anniversary edition! Should be quite a blast!
And if you've never been --- come share a crazy night with us and see what all the talk was about!
Dine early in one of the 6 delightful restaurants at the Nugget. Out-of-towners can book rooms here.
Welcome to "the world of expiring minds - a snappy little revue about the collapse of culture, the demise of language and meaning, and the anxiety of lives cut loose from their moorings and set adrift on a sea of medical wastes."
"Six Women with Brain Death" is a twisted look at feminine issues via a compilation of musical sketches created from tabloid headlines, soap operas, junk food, like: “Overweight Prom Queen Candidate Loses Crown!” “Housewife Keeps Severed Head On Cake Plate!” “Bambi Goes Haywire in Forest With Uzi!” To the expiring mind of a modern American woman, life can read like a tabloid headline.
What is the show about? Uhhhh - try this review from 'Talkin' Broadway'... "It's sketch comedy so schizophrenic it should wear five straitjackets. It's The Threepenny Opera having its period. It's "Jacques Brel is Dead and In Terrible Shape and Living Underground". It's the theatrical equivalent of genetic mutation. It's brilliant. It's bewildering. It's ghastly. It's glorious. It's a floor wax. And a dessert topping.... A description of anything that happens - assuming anything does happen, which is somewhat in doubt - would be of no earthly use to anyone with a fully functioning brain. The show is best experienced in writing as it is in the theater, as a series of disconnected images: A woman singing a duet with a cherished soap star about the benefits (or perils) of flying Lufthansa; a pastoral forest scene interrupted by a machine gun-toting deer named Rambi; a high school reunion held somewhere between Fifth Avenue and the Fifth Circle of Hell; a blonde's head singing a country spiritual while on a silver tray; a Barbie and Ken wedding complete with plastic copulation; and a convention of literal tinfoil hat wearers proclaiming God to be an alien.”
From "GuidetoMusicalTheatre.com": This wild and womanly 'right-on' look at our contemporary culture has already become a cult classic in the USA. Tackling a large range of subjects from "genuine press-on nails" to Barbi and Ken with detours through a forest where Bambi meets Rambo and severed heads from aging prom queens have a chatty after-life decapitation, Six Women With Brain Death is a hard-rockin', harder-talkin' (the language is appropriate to the "grown-up" material and we disclaim all responsibility) six-woman roller-coaster ride through the end of the millennium, but the scattered firing finds its targets with uncanny accuracy! Songs include "David, Don't Fly Lufthansa", "Prom Queen" and "Rambi".
I am thrilled and excited to call Bruka "home" for a few months. I LOVE this awesome, ground-breaking theater, and I love the people who work and create and thrive there. I'm having a blast!! Thank you, Mary Bennett!
Romance, loneliness, sex, obsession, addiction, forgiveness, pleasure, acceptance, service, joy! --- just some of the facets of the musical stories I will be telling in this new musical expose’ of my living under the negative influences of selfish, insecure love, and learning to let go and trust in the postive influence of pure Love. It’s a new concert exploring my personal journey through all its various expressions.
As I have been choosing the songs for this show from writers across several decades and genres, I realize my personal struggles seem to be quite universal! I know my own songs will tell their stories -- I’m nervously excited to share some of my writing with you! But I am mostly relying on the insightful material of some of my favorite artists (like Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Bette Midler, Babs, KD Lang, Jennifer Holliday, Heart, Todd Rundgren) and diverse songwriters to help reveal some of the questions, delusions, agonies, mistakes, delights, pitfalls, recognitions, revelations, and new intentions we all make under the influence of love.
This show will contain some adult themes and material, and might not be suitable for younger audiences.
Accompanied by my wonderful and diverse trio - pianist Peter Supersano, bassist Joe McKenna, and percussionist Eric Middleton, and there will be several wonderful generous local singers joining me as well! We will weave pop, rock, R&B, jazz and theatrical songs into a colorful tapestry of love’s many shades.
Tickets: $18 Seniors/Students, $20 General, and $25 at the Door
We will be video-taping, so bring your best applause!
The Brüka Theater is a comfortable, charming, intimate performance space, with seating limited to about 75. Please get your tickets now to be sure of a seat!
In this unique intimate space I have designed these two unique intimate musical glimpses into some of my passions, pleasures, pathos, playfulness, and purpose – to entertain, enlighten, experience life, experiment, and emanate joy!
Sound production by Nick Sorrentino, and lighting by Bruka’s technical director David Simpson.
I am having so much fun putting together this show!! I took a long look at all the musicals I have had the great fortune to play in – over my 40 years doing this!! -- and have picked some of my absolute favorite songs, and I hope some of yours! This show will be a full-length 2-Act concert featuring about 24 Broadway musical selections. I’ve chosen songs from several of my characters in shows such as “Sweeney Todd”, “Mame”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Annie Get Your Gun”, “Hair”, “Showboat”, and “Annie”, as well as some shows I wish I could do (like "Sunset Boulevard", "Jekyll and Hyde", "Porgy and Bess", and "Spamalot!") and some classics from the pens of Oscar Hammerstein, the Gershwins, Sondheim, Kander and Ebb, and more!
I will sing most of these songs as their writers intended, and some I will experiment with, conveying my love of jazz, blues, rock, R&B and gospel to tell MY story in the music. I will be accompanied by my dear friends and long-time musical collaborators - pianist Peter Supersano and bassist Joe McKenna, with a some occasional help from some backing tracks.
I can hardly wait till this Sunday to sing and act them out for you! I really hope you and your family and friends can share this rare night with us!
My dear Reno friend, trumpeter John Gronberg - now the music teacher at a high school in Oregon, recommended me for this school jazz festival 2 years ago in Roseburg OR, and they have asked me back!
Students from about 6-7 schools come to share their work and mock-compete to prepare for larger competitions. I'll present a vocal clinic, and coach each of the middle school and high school choirs and soloists throughout the day. Then at 7PM I'll perform in concert with the Umpqua College quartet, their vocal jazz ensemble, and with John's high school big band, too! This concert is open to the public, tickets are cheap ($7 each or $15 for a family!), and its a fun night for all the family.
Here is a review of my 2011 performance at this delightful event...
Cami Thompson presents her (mostly) annual "Holiday Evening with Cami and Friends" at the Steinway Piano Gallery, 500 E. Moana Lane, Reno NV at 5:00PM in the large open showroom. Steinway Gallery hosted this concert in 2007, the year they opened their doors in Reno, and Cami has been friends with owners Lamis and Arlen Pritchard ever since! Their joyful generosity to the music world of Reno has been a blessing to our community!
Cami first started this concert series in 1995 in a Peppermill Casino convention room, and it has worked its way around several Reno venues over the course of 18 years, including the Lear Theater, Sparks Victorian Square, Pioneer Center, and Harrah's Showroom.
This special non-denominational/multi-spirituality Holiday concert will feature Cami in an intimate setting with her jazz trio: Peter Supersano will play piano on his favorite 9-foot Steinway, Joe McKenna will work that bass, and Tony Savage will provide the rhythm for our voyage. Selections will come from Cami's "Colors of Christmas" CD, seasonal favorites, and winter romance classics.
Sponsored by Nevada Opera, there will also be appearances by Nevada Opera Chorus members (who sang with Cami last year in her portion of the Nevada Opera Christmas Concert at the Pioneer, and just recently in "Sweeney Todd") and the Nevada Opera Youth Chorus.
Cami's soaring vocals and unique sense of humor, wit, compassion, and deep spiritual beliefs will warm hearts and renew sprits. Bring the whole family -- kids, visiting guests, in-laws -- and be prepared for a little caroling yourselves, as their will always be a sing-along at the end. Dress up in your favorite holiday sweater or frills and frocks for a lovely sit-down concert, followed by a reception with Cami and Friends.
He will be joined by Judy Hall on piano, and share the stage with the theatrical jazz vocalist Cami Thompson.
Other special guests include Maria Muldaur and Nicolas Bearde, 'Til Dawn and The San Domenico Virtuoso Program Quartet. It's a showcase of the kind of talent that has made Bread & Roses shows legendary for 38 years! Read More About the Performers Here
This is a great opportunity to enjoy a one-of-a-kind show with all proceeds from the concert and LIVE AUCTION bringing courage, comfort, hope and joy to children, teens, adults and elders living in hospitals, shelters, convalescent homes, and other isolated circumstances. WeTAKE HEART from your generosity and cannot do it without you.
Here is a testimonial about the incredible work of Bread & Roses by Board member and volunteer performer Toby Nady. I think it tells the story quite well as to why as a community we need to support this organization:
"If there’s a universal language, it’s definitely the language of MUSIC. On one level or another we all speak it, we all understand it, we all respond to it. In fact, in many ways, music conveys much more to us than words ever can: The capacity of music to uplift us, comfort us, teach us things we never knew—or things we always knew—is unique and remarkable. The ability of music to heal—emotionally, spiritually, physically—is nothing short of magical.
Music enables me to share the very best in me with the best in you. This is what Bread & Roses does day in and day out. It’s what Mimi Farina cared so deeply about and what has made her legacy so strong and enduring. Everyone has experienced it…whether you play music or listen to it, or both. But why? You can’t define it. You can’t put a price tag on it. You can’t even really equate it with anything else in our lives. Although you can try…it’s sort of like the most delicious meal you can imagine after days of not eating. Or someone reaching out to hold your hand. Or finding love where you least expect it. Music transports you, takes you to a different place, a place so intrinsically human it can make you cry.
I know many of you have not had the privilege of attending a Bread & Roses performance in one of the many hospital rooms, homeless shelters, drug rehabs or other facilities to witness firsthand how transforming the Bread & Roses experience truly is… “the healing that takes place when a performer and audience meet heart-to-heart”, as Bonnie Raitt, a longtime Bread & Roses supporter has described it. As a performer, I can tell you without a doubt, people need music…people need Bread & Roses. Bread & Roses is a great gift to our community, their work is profound, it connects us all."
That about says it all! Hope to see you there.
Thoroughly Modern Millie is a musical with music by Jeanine Tesori, lyrics by Dick Scanlan, and a book by Richard Morris and Scanlan.Based on the 1967 film of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love – a thoroughly modern aim in 1922, when women were just entering the workforce. Millie soon begins to take delight in the flapper lifestyle, but problems arise when she checks into a hotel owned by the leader of a slavery ring in China. The style of the musical is comic pastiche.
After auditions at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California in October 2000, the show opened on Broadway in April 2002.The production subsequently won six 2002 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Due to the success of the original Broadway production, there were both a United States tour and a West End production launched in 2003, followed by a United Kingdom tour in 2005. The musical has since become a popular choice for high school productions.
POST-SHOW POST...
What a wonderful night in Roseville. I shared the concert stage with two other "Divas" - Laura Didier and Cynthia Douglas - with the amazing accompaniment of piano genius Jim Martinez. Everyone had a great time, the audience was delightful, the venue intimate, the sound sublime... I just had a great time! Thank you all!
Here are a few comments I have received...
Laura Olson Didier...
shared the stage last night with two AMAZING ladies - Cami Thompson and Cynthia Marie Douglas. They blew the roof off of the place! Seriously, check out their websites, grab their music, see them perform live, seek them out - you will thank me!!
We saw you last nite and thought you were absolutely fabulous!!!
Cami You are a hoot!!! Oh I just love your style and your repertoire and everything. It was wonderful to meet you and hear you. You had me in tears of pure laughter with your blues number and I felt the longing in I want to be loved by you. Oh I so know what that is about.
Clay Kowarsh...
Cami,
Great to see you again for this Outstanding performance.... Too bad no one thought to invest in a Video or Recording of You and Cynthia Douglas..... TWO REAL PROS!!
Your voice has improved with maturity.... what ever you are doing... keep doing it. By the way we sat just behind your Dad & Mom. I Guarantee it that they were riveted to their chairs by your set.. Your dad has a great sense of humor and your mom looks like the kind of mom that you want to wrap her in your arms for a Biiiiiiiiiig hug.
Any way, get us back on your list of fans for your up coming performances and we see if we can do them.
Warren Burns...
Heard you tonight at Sherman-Clay.
Better than Streisand.
Thank you Cami.
I have been blessed to participate in the Bread and Roses shows for over 10 years now. I donate my time to sing at various senior care centers around the Bay Area, and the experiences have been so gratifying. I've worked with wonderful pianists like Si Perkoff, his son Max Perkoff, "The Duchess" Miss Gini Wilson, and Ross Gualco. We have a great time sharing what we love, and for this we get to meet a bunch of other artists who also give their time, and share what they love, and have a party of music and food and joy.
Mine is a good life.
