 A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CAMI...

Renowned jazz vocalist Cami Thompson is from Reno Nevada, calls San Francisco and Reno home, but the world is her stage. From jazz festivals in Europe, USO tours throughout East Asia, to concerts, clubs, and theaters across the globe, Cami amazes audiences with her 4-octave voice of beauty, musicality, theatricality, control, and passion, her zany wit, her spontaneous blasts of improvisational scatting, her humorous personal interactions with her listeners, and her deeply emotional connection to her audience.

So come on in! Listen to some music clips, peek at some pictures, watch a video, read a few stories, buy some CDs.  Have you already seen Cami perform? Write her a note about a concert or gig you were at, or tell us about a place you'd like Cami to play, by going to her contact page.

Need a band? "Cami & The Cosmopolitans" are ready to play for you, bringing you the swinging sounds of the 30's, 40's and 50's with a sharp-dressed 7-piece band. "Cami & Company" (trio to quintet) covers a century of American music, the rhythm and romance of our culture, interpreted with Cami's soulful jazz attitude. And Cami and her 17-piece big band are waiting in the wings to fill your night with dancing and romancing.

If you need a bio or a photo for your PR, come and get it, or contact Cami.

We hope you'll feel like buying a CD or two (Cami has 6) -- it's just a click away, so easy to buy online now!

Enjoy your time here, and thanks for listening!

SIAMSA - A CELTIC CHRISTMAS

GRAND SIERRA RESORT SHOWROOM 2500 E 2nd St  RENO NV 89502

Ticket Price: Varies (will post as soon as I know!)

For the 3rd year in a row, I am the vocal director for the (18th) annual production of "SIAMSA - A Celtic Christmas Show", produced and directed by Amanda Coulson and the Reno Irish Dance Company.  This is a very large and fully professional production with a cast of over 50 dancers, singers, musicians and special guests, and the wonderful Jesse Briggs in the lead role of “Holly”, a young orphaned woman who is looking for the true meaning of Christmas to share with her younger sister, who has never heard of the Celtic tradition of the “candle in the window.”  In this beautifully staged and costumed 2-act (2-hour) production, Holly travels to many different Celtic villages, each with its own story and dance number or song. A young women choir sings carols and holiday songs in harmony, which I have arranged and directed.

More info to come once ticketing site is set up.

The War Cycle Trilogy, part 2: "Nation of Two"  By Tom Burmester

Brüka Theatre,  99 N. Virginia Street at 1st St .   RENO NV 89502

Price: $20-$25

I am thrilled to be cast in a leading role in a relatively new play, "NATION OF TWO", the second of a trilogy of plays called "The War Cycle", collaboratively written by Tom Burmester and the Los Angeles Theatre Ensemble, @2009. Nation of Two, inspired by true accounts of the families of soldiers fallen in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, is a domestic drama that studies the grieving processes of families that lose relatives in war. It follows the lives of the Harper family as they prepare to scatter the ashes of 24-year-old Lt. Michael Harper on the anniversary of his combat-related death in the Iraq War. A surprise visit from a soldier who served with Michael at the time of his death ignites a powder keg of emotion and throws the family into crisis as they strive to preserve their memories of Michael while learning to let go. I will be playing the role of Lilith, Michael's mother, under the awesome direction of Chase McKenna at Brüka Theater, running 4 weeks - March 16 through April 7.

CRITICS SAY...

"Cami Thompson's finger-snapping flights of scat are as cliff-hanging as her ballads are touching."

"Miss Thompson sings with the clarity of a Barbara Cook, the range and control of a Cleo Laine, and the emotional impact of a Lena Horne. There's no denying the sincerity of Thompson's matchless articulation and the depth of her seamless shifts of mood in all she sings."

"Cami is a first-rate actress with what it takes to touch the soul of a song."

IN THE RECENT PAST...

"NEXT TO NORMAL"!

Runs July 7th thru 30th during Reno's Artown Festival

I am thrilled to be Music and Vocal Director for this outstanding Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical opera with an outstanding cast. Its story concerns a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effects that her illness and the attempts to alleviate it have on her family. The musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and the underbelly of suburban life.

CAST: Cori Lynne, Ryan Kelly, Thomas Thompson, Adam Semas, Natalie Gomez, Adam Walmsley

How does a family deal with mental illness and tragedy over 16 years? In this show, written by Tom Kitt (American IdiotEveryday Rapture and If/Then) and Brian Yorkey (If/Then and The Last Ship), it is done humorously, cleverly, and very musically - and each of the 38 songs is taut with emotional reality and depth.

The musical opened on Broadway in April 2009. It was nominated for eleven 2009 Tony Awards and won three, Best Original ScoreBest Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley. It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming just the eighth musical in history to receive the honor. The previous musical to win the Pulitzer was Rent, in 1996, which was also directed by Michael Greif. In awarding the prize to Kitt and Yorkey, the Pulitzer Board called the show "a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals."

Brüka Theater, Reno:

I had the great opportunity to Music Direct and Co-Direct my first musical theater production this past summer (2016) as Bruka Theatre presented the unusual, unpredictable, and uncanny "Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play". SOOO much work, soooo many hours, and sooo many wonderful, talented people to co-create with! And now, because I somehow survived it with some semblance of tenacity and skill, I am the current Artist-In-Residence Music Director for this whole season! Quite an honor, and I hope I make our amazing Artistic Director (and dear friend) Mary Bennett proud of this choice. I have already written, arranged, recorded music and vocal directed for their Fall production of "Stage Kiss"; I'm starting work with some of the actors of "Tooth of Crime" to improve their singing for the April production; I am prepping ukulele-accompanied songs for the April showing of "Stupid F**ing Bird" (a spin-off of Chekhov's The Seagull); and then I go into full-time work as Music and Vocal Director for our July Artown production of the Pulitzer Prize winning rock musical/opera "NEXT TO NORMAL"!

Learn more about Bruka Theatre here!

"Siamsa: A Celtic Christmas" presented by The Reno Irish Dance Company! I had the great fortune to work again with the dynamic and talented director/choreographer/Diva Amanda Coulson as Vocal Director and Story-teller for her 10th annual production of their delightful family show. Sept. 2012 -  We hope you enjoyed our amazing production of "Sweeney Todd" with the awesome Nevada Opera - fully stage with full orchestra and cast at Reno's Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in September 2012! I wish I could just do this role all across the country for the rest of my life!!!

"Nevada Opera’s ambitious undertaking of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” proved to be a success as audiences from both performances gave extended standing ovations to the predominantly New York cast.... The jewel in the crown was local talent Cami Thompson, whose extraordinary voice lent itself well to the challenging vocal pyrotechnics required of her character, Mrs. Lovett .... Thompson’s impeccable timing and interpretation made Mrs. Lovett the one to watch when she was on stage. In one scene she showed a remarkable vulnerably not presented by previous big names in that role like Angela Lansbury and Helena Bonham-Carter."

We've added some unreleased live concert tracks from some concerts Cami did over the last few years. The audio guys at Harrrah's Reno Showroom were wonderful to record a great Holiday show, and we just wanted to share some of the "magic" and spirit made that night. Cami performed all of these songs during her recent Holiday concerts, so if you missed her, you can now listen to these tracks here.... full band, full choir, background singers... THE WORKS! Cami's favorite audio-man Mark Simon recorded her with her trio at the Sands Poolside Concert Series in 2004 - great stuff!
